Do you need to wear eyeglasses or contact lens to see better or clearly? Have you ever had cataracts?

If your answer is no to one or both of these questions, chances are you will eventually need some kind of glasses or contacts to improve your vision. As you age, your chances of developing a cataract in one or both eyes increase with each birthday celebrated.

Not to scare you, but did you know that cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the US and the world? According to Prevent Blindness America:

“Cataract can also occur at any age as a result of other causes such as eye injury, exposure to toxic substances or radiation, or as a result of other diseases such as diabetes.”

“Congenital cataracts may even be present at birth due to genetic defects or developmental problems. Cataracts in infants may also result from exposure to diseases such as rubella during pregnancy.”

… cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. In the United States, cataract is sometimes considered a conquered disease because treatment is widely available that can eliminate vision loss due to the disease. However, cataract still accounts for a significant amount of vision impairment in the U.S., particularly in older people who may have difficulty accessing appropriate eye care due to cost, availability or other barriers.”

“Treatment of cataract involves removal of the clouded natural lens. The lens is usually replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) implant. Cataract removal is now one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures with more than a million such surgeries performed each year.”

“Surgery is not truly a cure for cataract, however, and its success in controlling vision loss comes with a price. It is estimated that the direct annual medical costs for outpatient, inpatient and prescription drug services related to the treatment of cataract total $6.8 billion.”

I had my first cataract in one of my eyes when I was in my late 30s. About 5 years later, my other eye developed a cataract. In both cases, eye specialists removed the clouded lens in my eyes and replaced them with artificial lens. Before my cataracts and since, I also wear eyeglasses to full function visually.

But what if you were told that you could avoid ever developing a cataract and that you could have vision better was three times better than 20/20 without ever having to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses?

What does that mean? If someone held up a book or newspaper and you were able to read it from a distance close to ten feet away, with or without your glasses. Would you like to be able to read the same text from up to 30 feet away, without the need for glasses or contact lenses?

Dr. Garth Webb, an optometrist has invented what he calls the Ocumetics Bionic Lens. This is not science fiction or anything like the old TV show, the Bionic Man.

According to a recent report:

“This development comes thanks to the Ocumetics Bionic Lens. This dynamic lens essentially replaces a person’s natural eye lens. It’s placed into the eye via a saline-filled syringe, after which it unravels itself in under 10 seconds.”

“It may sound painful, but Dr. Garth Webb, the optometrist who invented the Ocumetics Bionic Lens, says that the procedure is identical to cataract surgery and would take just about eight minutes. He adds that people who have the specialized lenses surgically inserted would never get cataracts and that the lenses feel natural and won’t cause headaches or eyestrain.”

“The Bionic Lens may sound like a fairy tale (or sci-fi dream), but it’s not. It is actually the end result of years and years of research and more than a little funding — so far, the lens has taken nearly a decade to develop and has cost US$3 million.”

Webb’s bionic lens was scheduled for human trials this summer and if all goes well, it may be available to public as soon as March 2018.

Imagine having such powerful and excellent vision without having to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses and never having to worry about developing cataracts. Dr. Webb’s invention promises to be a huge development treating various vision issues.
