In an earlier post, I wrote about the dangers many people, especially diabetics face in the winter time. The colder it is outside, the more our furnaces run to keep us warm and the more the furnaces run, the drier the air in our house gets. That may not sound very concerning, but realize that the extreme dryness of the furnace heat directly impacts our skin and since diabetics tend to have drier skin to begin with, this extra dry factor can cause areas of our skin to crack open, especially our feet. The reason that’s so important is that one of the areas that tend to be affected by diabetes is the feet. It can hinder blood flow to the feet, causing nerve damage. This also makes the feet more susceptible to infections that could lead to the amputation of one or both feet.

On that post, I shared that my wife found a blood trail on the kitchen floor and that we discovered that one of my toes had cracked open due to the dryness. I also had a crack in the skin on the ball of the foot and on the heel, all due to the dryness.

My feet have always had dry, flaky and peeling skin. When I was kid, I would sit and peel off the flakes of skin on my feet. Since being diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic about 15-years ago, my feet have gotten drier. They flake, peel and crack more than they ever did and during the winter it gets much worse.

I’ve tried at least a dozen foot moisturizer products and no matter how much I lather it on my feet, they still seem dry within hours. Wearing socks and shoes when home seems to help a little, but my feet still dry up quickly after using any of the store-bought products recommended for dry feet.

After discovering my bleeding toe, my wife mentioned that she saw a post on Facebook about using Vicks VapoRub for cracked heels. There are hundreds, if not thousands of health tips on social media, many of which are more just old wives’ tales than actually beneficial working tips, but since nothing else has been working, we bought a jar of Vicks VapoRub to try on my feet.

My loving wife helped by rubbing my feet with the VapoRub. She covered the bottom of my feet, the tops and even between my toes. Two days later, I had her check my feet, since it’s easier for her to see the bottoms and her response was ‘WOW’. She said my feet looked normal and that the cracks on the toe, ball of the foot and heel were all healing nicely and closing up. There wasn’t any dry flaky skin or any signs of dry skin.

After over 10-years of trying everything else under the sun to fight the dry cracking skin on my feet, I’m a firm believer in using the Vicks VapoRub after only 2 days of trying it. I also noticed another added benefit in that my feet smell better coated with the VapoRub than without.

The social media tip on the VapoRub also suggested using it for sore throats, as a decongestant, for coughs, sore muscles, headaches, ear aches, nail fungus, mosquito repellent, itchy bug bites, acne and cold sores. I haven’t tried any of these, but I will swear that it’s the best remedy for dry feet and highly recommend that every diabetic buy themselves a jar of Vicks VapoRub as it just may save them from losing their feet.
