What a 2020 Democratic Victory Will Mean to Senior Healthcare

Health Wellness

Due to the high cost of private healthcare insurance, the majority of seniors in America rely on Medicare Parts A & B as their sole medical insurance. Part A has no monthly fee, but Part B costs $135.50 a month which is automatically deducted from your monthly Social Security check.

Many of the Democrats running for the White House in 2020 are calling for some form of free Medicare for all – note that there are different versions depending upon the candidates. Basically, they want to impose a socialist nationalized free healthcare system for everyone.

For seniors, this sounds great, especially since free Medicare for all will eliminate the monthly $135.50 one is paying for Medicare Part B.

But, it isn’t FREE!!!

Think about the fact that we regularly hear that Medicare and Social Security are financially unstable and cannot be sustained under the circumstances. If Medicare is limited to seniors and the disabled, and Part B comes with a monthly fee, then how can the system operate when it covers everyone without any fees? You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand that someone has to pay for free Medicare for all.

Most of the versions of free Medicare for all being proposed by the 2020 Democratic candidates entail raising taxes on corporations and the wealthy. At least one Democrat has proposed increasing taxes on the wealthiest to as high as 90%.

There is no doubt that America’s record unemployment rates are the direct result of the corporate tax cuts and individual tax cuts passed by Republicans. Drastically increasing taxes on corporations and the wealthy will have the opposite effect on jobs. It will result in the loss of millions of jobs along with cuts in hours and benefits for many others. I heard one economist say that if we thought the recession that devastated America during the reign of Barack Obama was bad, the recession caused by free Medicare for all will be worse.

Many seniors are financially forced to work to make ends meet, but under such a recession with high unemployment, many of those seniors will not be able to find a job.

The economist pointed out that not only will free Medicare for all result in a really bad recession, but it will also result in much higher taxes for ALL Americans. He stated that to pay the $3 TRILLION a year price tag for free Medicare, will cost seniors and everyone else far more than the $135.50 a month they are currently paying for Medicare Part B.

Then consider what a nationalized healthcare system is like.

My friends in Great Britain tell me that under their nationalized healthcare system, they see their coverage continually decrease while their taxes to pay for it continually increase. One of my friends needed gall bladder surgery but, under the British national healthcare system, it took 7 months before she had her surgery. If any of you have ever had gall bladder problems, you know how painful it is, especially after every meal. The pain often is mistaken for a heart attack.

My friends in Canada tell the same story as those in Great Britain. Their coverage decreases while their taxes increase. Additionally, many Canadians cross into the US and pay uninsured rates for healthcare rather than undergo the healthcare in Canada which they often describe as substandard and risky.

Venezuela also had a nationalized free healthcare system and their system is so bad that thousands of pregnant women cross the border into neighboring Colombia to have their babies because the healthcare in Venezuela is so bad.

If Democrats win the White House and control of both houses of Congress, they are certain to pass a nationalized free Medicare for all system. This will come with a very high cost, financially and health wise. Many more seniors will die earlier than necessary because of a nationalize healthcare system and many will find themselves unable to pay their bills because they won’t be able to find suitable work.

Perhaps we should refer to the Democrats’ free Medicare for all as Costly Death for All?
